Introduction: Ghana

First things first:
Thank you for taking the time to check this out...

I have set up this on-line journal so that people can see what I get up while I am away for the next six months.

As of Oct 10th (until around March 25th 2006) I will be volunteering in Ghana for a charity called Unite For Sight. For more information their web address is http://www.uniteforsight.org

Initially I planned to work in a refugee camp for people from Liberia - even though the civil war had ended, the country is still in a bad way. Anyway, at the last minute I have changed my plans as there was unrest (and killings) in the camp...

I am now going to a village called Patriensa, which is approximately where the 'i' in Kumasi in is map of Ghana is:

(just to get you orientated Ghana is along the west coast of africa, is about the size of the UK)
here is another fun map: http://www.yourchildlearns.com/africa_map.htm

Broadly speaking, I will be doing eye screening for local villagers, giving out glasses, teaching people about good eye care practices, and assisting in cataract operations.

This is only an introduction, but please keep checking this site out in the future to keep updated on my progress and adventures

Sara
